I have just spent a few days in San Francisco. Not a city I know well, but ask anyone and they will tell you it is one of the most beautiful in the US. It is also easy to spend time in. Union Square, Haight – Ashbury, the Golden Gate Park, the wharves and waterfront, Alcatraz and Sausalito all warrant a visit or two.
Before deciding how best to photograph it I needed to explore the main attractions. Whilst there are a lot of interesting spots in the city it was the two main bridges that I was drawn to. The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate Strait, linking the City of San Francisco with Marin County. Less well known, but just as spectacular is the Bay Bridge. The San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge which links the city with Oakland.
I photographed the Golden Gate Bridge from Baker Beach and the Golden Gate Park on several occasions. But the first of my featured photos of San Francisco was shot from Baker Beach at sunset. Unusually there was no fog or clouds and I like the colour in the late evening sky which sets off the orange in the Bridge beautifully.
My other featured photos of San Francisco show the Bay Bridge at night. The first was taken from across the water. I was grateful to the clouds over the city which brought this panorama to life.
The second was shot from high above the Bay Bridge, looking back towards San Francisco. I like the dominant colours of the bridge against the city skyline.
We will be adding a collection of Photos of San Francisco to our World Cities Collection shortly. In the meantime call 01992 535344 if you would like to find out more about these images.View more photographs of the World Cities online
